Why Backflow Testing Is Important

Clean water only flows one direction — until something goes wrong. Backflow testing is the yearly proof that your protection still works.

What is backflow?

Water in your plumbing is supposed to move in one direction: from the city main into your building. Backflow is the reverse — used, stagnant or contaminated water flowing back into the clean supply. It happens when supply pressure drops (a main break or heavy hydrant use creates suction) or when downstream pressure gets higher than the supply (a pump, boiler or elevated tank pushes water back). Wherever drinking water connects to a potential source of contamination, that point is a cross-connection, and it needs a backflow prevention assembly.

It protects health

A cross-connection can pull fertilizer, pesticides, boiler treatment chemicals, soap, stagnant irrigation water or worse into the same lines people drink from. Contamination is invisible until people get sick.

Assemblies fail silently

Backflow preventers are mechanical: springs, seals, rubber seats and moving parts that foul with debris, wear out and fatigue. A failed assembly looks exactly like a working one from the outside.

It's the law in Texas

TCEQ requires every backflow prevention assembly to be tested at installation, and assemblies protecting against a health hazard to be tested at least annually by a licensed tester. Cities may require more.

It keeps your water on

Miss the deadline in your test-due notice and you risk violation notices, fees, failed inspections or interrupted service. A yearly test is far cheaper than the alternative.

Good to know

  • Only a licensed tester using calibrated differential gauge equipment can certify an assembly.
  • Single check valves are not recognized as backflow prevention assemblies in Texas — they can't be tested.
  • RP, DCVA, PVB and SVB assemblies are testable; atmospheric vacuum breakers and air gaps are inspected instead.
  • Testing requirements typically must be completed within 30 days of a test-due notice.
  • With annual testing and maintenance, a quality assembly can last many years.

Common Questions

How long does a backflow test take?

Most single assemblies take 15 to 30 minutes. Water is shut off briefly during the test, so we coordinate timing with you.

How often do I need testing?

At installation, then at least once every year for assemblies protecting against a health hazard. Some cities and water systems require it on all assemblies.

What if my assembly fails?

We explain what failed, repair or rebuild it where possible, then retest and certify it in the same visit when parts are on hand.

Who has to have backflow testing?

Commonly businesses, restaurants, medical offices, apartment complexes, car washes, fire lines, and any property with an irrigation system, well, pool or water treatment equipment.
